WAFA BENNANI
Founder and Visionary

Wafa is a devoted and proud Muslim, wife and mother of two children. She has been a Registered Nurse for over 15 years, specializing in School Nursing. She chairs the Medical Committee of Home of Moroccan Educators and Moroccan Students in America ( HMEMSA.ORG), where she helps improve the emergency response system in Morocco. Wafa has worked on a voluntary basis, for over 7 years to find Muslim  American homes for Moroccan orphans. She advocates for the reform of the child care system in Morocco, and for improved standards in intercountry kafala. Wafa’s work has been her motivating force to have a non-profit adoption agency that offers faith based services to the Muslim community and finding homes for Muslim children around the world.

SARAH HAIDER
Vice President

Sarah Haider is a founding board member with New Star Kafala, serving as Vice President of the Board, to establish the  first Muslim International Adoption Agency in the US. Joining hands with New Star Kafala team gives her the satisfaction of providing an avenue for sustained support of Muslim orphans from across the world, and their placement with Muslim families in the US. She adopted both her daughters from Pakistan, and is the founder of Pakistan Adoption Group www.pakistanadoption.com. Sarah has helped thousands of families all over the world adopt babies from Pakistan through the past 11 years.

JILL WAJIHA KHALIL
Secretary

Jill Wajiha Khalil is an adoptive Mom and advocate for children in need of families. She has been active in organizational development and Islamic learning for 15 years. She serves as Secretary on the New Star Kafala Board and also initiates marketing campaigns to spread awareness about the cause.

IMRAN KHAN
Treasurer

Imran Khan is our Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Khan has over 4 years of experience in financial statement audit as well as 2 years of experience in financial statement and tax preparation. Most recently he served as a senior auditor at Ernst & Young, LLP, where he was responsible for comprehensive management of client relationships and audit engagements. 

YUSRA GOMAA

Yusra Gomaa joined New Star Kafala as a board member in 2015 and, through this international adoption agency, aims to continue her work to encourage Muslim families in the United States to adopt orphaned or neglected children in need of a permanent home. She also runs the Muslim Adoption Network, a centralized network of Muslim foster and adoptive parents that is used to locate homes for U.S. Muslim children in need of a home.

BARBARA J. MCARTNEY

Barbara has been a practicing attorney for over 30 years. She has focused on Family Law, acting as an Assistant District Attorney, Victim Advocate, Children’s Law Guardian and Family Court mediator, and founder of Graham’s Gift Children’s Foundation (the predecessor agency of New Star Kafala) for the past 13 years.  Ms. McArtney is a founding Board member of Parents for Ethical Adoption Reform (PEAR), is an adoptee and mother of seven children, including 2 that were internationally adopted.
STEVE  MOISOFF
NY STATE MSW
 
Steve has been working in the field of adoption for 30 years with over 2,500 families who have successfully adopted internationally and domestically. His activities have primarily consisted of conducting home study investigations. Steve has written the chapter on the Home study for the NYS Bar Association 1997 publication Adoption Law in New York. Steve is also president of the Adoptive Birth Mother Foundation, an agency that provides post placement educational, health, vocational and financial support to birth mothers. He participates in many adoption conferences and has served as a board member for the Steinway Mental Health Organization. Steve has one adult son with whom he takes annual adventure trips. He also has a sister with two adopted children. His degrees include an LMSW from NYS and an LSW from New Jersey.

MONA BENNANI
Administrative Assistant

Mona is currently completing a Public Administration degree. She has interned with the Orange County Human Relations Department, Islamic Relief and the Council for American Islamic Relations.

GRIFFIN SMITH
Case Manager

Griffin Smith is our case worker. His specialty is neuro-psychological development and trauma in the developing child.  Griffin is brother to two adopted children.
